The merchants knock on Bronzegift’s doors, but in return hear nothing. And this brings us to Bronzegift’s present situation - still an underpopulated, but productive hub of industry, but certainly on the decline now that it has lost the ability to export gold statues, which it has hundreds of. And so she passed mandates with increasing ferocity and frequency, ensuring that all items composed of gold, from the most insignificant ring to the massive statues that had become Bronzegift’s chief export, were to stay well within her influence, and any dwarf who endeavoured to exchange these for foreign supplies as the once-gold-swamped trade depot would be having an interesting talk with her, as there was no formal system of justice yet. She needed gold. And not a small amount, trinkets, baubles or even the usual symbols of office - heaps would not satisfy her. Deep within the dark, chilling depths of Dentsabres’ mind an idea had made itself known, and had fought off all other urges until it became the sole purpose of her existence. But the relationship between Duchess and duchy comprises a chasm wider than these simple antics would imply. It is rumoured she even derives a twisted satisfaction from it, and reads the names to herself as she falls asleep. ![]() Despite these shenanigans, she did not even blink an eyelid, and every morning she navigates the maze of tombstones that forms her sleeping quarters, without the slightest hint of the nightmares that these would bring about in any sane dwarf. However, in a fit of liberalism, the venerable expedition leader (not yet even declared mayor, due to the small population, much to his distaste) has declared that all memorial slabs (of which there are a great many, owing to the sizable paranormal population of the fortress and surrounding area) are to be erected within Dentsabres’ bedroom. It is rumoured that the Queen herself, Nish Langgudthîkut, acknowledges the grandeur of Dentsabre’s hoard. She currently possesses several solid gold statues and a number large, engraved rooms to serve as her bedroom, throne room, personal dining hall and mausoleum. As our influence grew, so did Dentsabre’s opinion of herself. On the next two visits, the Liaison was more and more impressed, and promoted our little hamlet of Bronzegift first to a county, then to a barony. When asked to suggest an individual to take the post of Baron or Baroness, the honour fell to Dentsabres as she was the only one who had any spare time to use on whatever it is nobles do - all other dwarves were vital to the running of the fortress and production of its glittering hoard. A while later I managed to convince the Outpost Liaison from the Mountainhomes to consider my hamlet a duchy, for it had accumulated massive amounts of wealth despite its meager population (17 adults currently, only 14 at the time). ![]() If she were gifted instead with a spear or axe, I imagine she would actually have quite a good chance against a real Forgotten Beast now - both forgotten beast kills were down to luck (her adversary undulated off a cliff and subsequently smashed its head open, the next one had no effect anyway as it was made of steam and thus counted as dead after a little waving at it). She rapidly became a very strong and agile specimen, and extremely gifted with a hammer and shield. She then became a Militia Commander, as I could rely on my drawbridge and cage traps to protect me from assault, and had little use of a military. She remains one of only two dwarves thus far to survive doing so. She was a migrant, and was allowed into my fortress not because of her skills, but as a reward for slaying a Forgotten Beast. ![]() This privilege has fallen to a fairly young (65 years old) warrior named Nomal Dentsabres. Gleryff: DF wiki article on nobles, 40d rather than current version as it is less forgiving So my fortress is a duchy, and that means that one dwarf in my fortress is a Duchess.
